This show has really gone down the tubes. After having some wonderful contestants who've gone on to make good music that's sold well, earned awards and
all the rest, we had what looked to be a stellar season. What went wrong? Was it just the overt pimpage of the Robot Stepford Child? Did that slowly infect all
the other contestants?
This final three has one person who is still trying yet being shat on and all her efforts ignored, one person who is on cruise-control and yet Simon declared him the winner of the night, and one person who is oblivious because he's a robot he figures he's into the finals regardless of what happens. He's probably right on that one, because ... the fix is in.
I'm somewhat disgusted with the horrible song choices, and really disgusted with the terrible "judging." When the bad performances are praised to the skies and the good performances are panned, it just makes me want to watch something else. Or break something, or both. What's especially galling is the knowledge that the judges write their comments before the show, and those comments relate to a completely different set of performances.
Tonight was "Choices Night." Each judge picked a song for one of the top 3, then each Top 3 picked a song, then "the producers" picked a song. Most of the performances other than Syesha's were below-par or worse.
First up in each round was the Gasptard. David Archuleta's three songs were "And So It Goes" chosen by Paula, "With You" chosen by himself and "Longer" chosen by the producers. It's difficult (read: impossible) to select the best/worse, since my dear husband moaned and whined about having to listen to any of his singing/gasping/wheezing call it what you will, so I was forced to watch hockey. I caught a few bars here and there. It all sucked. I can't stand him. By the third round, however, Mr. AMAI had left the room, so I heard some of "Longer." It was his best of the night, in my view. Don't get excited. All his choices were at the bottom of my list.
Syesha went second in each round. Her first was an Alicia Keys song, as chosen by Randy. For "If I Aint Got You" Syesha wore a lovely sparkly champagne colored gown. Or was that a skirt with a top? No matter - the main thing is she did a lovely job with the song, no screeching, just beautiful vocals. I went without a few minutes of hockey in order to listen to her. The judges' comments were not up to snuff - damning with faint praise and funny faces. I hate them. Syesha chose "Fever" by Peggy Lee so she could use a chair. She wore a different shorter sparkly dress. This was another wonderful performance. She has really done something to control the screech factor. Her voice was awesome tonight! Simon thought she'll regret choosing this song.
The fix is in. OH FOR PETE'S SAKE! All season long the
Kids were given themes featuring songs from decades past. Syesha performed the song well; it's a timeless song, actually and the only reason for
Simon's crappy comments was to undermine her confidence.
The producers chose for Syesha a song that seemed very contemporary to me, "Hit Me Up." Her white sparkly top and black pants nicely complemented the upbeat number. I thought she did a great job with all three of her songs, showing range, emotion and most importantly, keeping her vocal smooth and creamy, with barely a screechy note all night. Such an improvement over just a couple of weeks ago. She is full of confidence and ability but the judges crapped all over her performances. Syesha deserves to do well, even if the crapfest judges on this show would rather see anybody else in the finals but her. I had a hard time picking my favorite: I liked all of them. She is far and away the best of the three who remain in this "competition."
David Cook was third to perform in each round. Simon chose a Roberta Flack song for him, "The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face." Meh. It started out kind of dull so I went back to hockey. For himself David C chose Switchfoot's "Dare You To Move," a song I've never much cared for. It was dull. The producers selected Aerosmith's "Don't Want To Miss A Thing" for his third song. I love this song, but once again it was meh. I admit I missed some of it. (Damn I guess the Flyers will have to come back next year and do better. They're down 3-0 in the series.)
Oh but guess what? Simon declared that Cook won the night. Did he really? Only in Simon's world. I think Syesha had a stellar night, personally. But I didn't hear the rehearsals that the judges obviously heard. And in all likelihood, the judges wrote their comments without hearing or seeing any performances at all. They dispensed their crappy comments with one goal in mind: to ensure that Syesha Mercado is eliminated from the show this week.
A number of times during the show all of Randy, Paula and Simon made comments to Syesha to the effect that this is as far as she's going. It's of a piece with the rest of the show: making negative comments for songs that have yet to be performed, making pronouncements on what is or is not "enough" to get to the final 2. Meh, who cares, right?
I used to like David Cook a lot more and I think he could have a good career away from the meddling interference of the powers that be who are involved in this show. He has been coasting lately, secure in the knowledge that he's one of The Chosen Ones destined to be in the final 2.
Well, if Syesha IS eliminated from the competition this week, I won't bother with the final 2. It's a huge joke and I've had enough. That's my choice after the blatant throwing under the bus of the best contestant still left in this competition.
Thanks for reading.
